How Amazon Prime Ireland works
Those who live outside the UK can also sign up for Amazon Prime. If you do that, you also get access to various Prime benefits.
Here’s more about how the UK version of Amazon Prime works for residents of Ireland.
Amazon Prime cost
The price of Amazon Prime is given in Pounds Sterling rather than Euros. It costs £8.99 per month for Prime video and the other benefits, or £95 per year.
The latter works out at £7.92 per month, so you can save the equivalent of £1.07 by paying in full upfront.
Amazon Prime benefits
So what do you get for £7.92 or £8.99 per month?
Here’s a breakdown by category so you can work out if it would benefit you.
Unlimited Priority Delivery
Amazon Prime members based in the Republic of Ireland get unlimited Priority Delivery on all eligible items, at no extra cost.
This is the same as for UK members, though deliveries may take two days to reach you instead of one.
Amazon Prime Video
Only members who live in the UK or Channel Islands can access, via Amazon.co.uk, the complete Prime video catalogue.
However, Prime members based elsewhere can use PrimeVideo.com to access movies and TV programmes.
You’ll need to sign into your account when accessing what to watch via PrimeVideo.com.
Unlimited Photo Storage
Access to photo storage is one of the lesser-known features of Amazon Prime membership.
All Prime members get 5GB of video and photo storage.
You can also upgrade your package to store even more video footage.
Amazon Music Prime
In addition to Amazon Prime video, you can also get Amazon Music Prime. This is not the same as Amazon Music Unlimited, but you can access more than two million tracks.
You can listen to these songs without being interrupted by ads. They include stations dedicated to certain eras and genres, plus tailor-made playlists.
Amazon Music Prime can be accessed via Fire, Apple, Android devices, or a computer. You can also listen via an Echo or Alexa speaker.
Free Kindle books
The book part of Prime video membership is known as Prime Reading. This is available on the same basis to Prime members living in Ireland as it is to UK residents.
You don’t need a Kindle or even the Prime video app to access more than 1,000 magazines, comics and books.
If you have an Apple or Android device, you can download the Kindle app to access this free Kindle owner’s lending library.
This is not unlimited reading; it’s access to about one thousand books and other publications.
Prime Gaming
Prime members outside the UK can also get gaming bonuses when you link your Amazon Prime account.
This includes the Twitch live streaming service and gaming freebies and extras.
Amazon Household
Prime Video members can share their benefits via Amazon Household.
Up to two adults and four children can share perks such as the free delivery service, Prime Video streaming and Kindle book bonuses.
Prime Try Before You Buy
Prime Try Before you Buy allows you to try on clothing and shoes at home before paying for them.
You then have a week to decide which items you want to keep before you need to pay for those. The other items must be returned.
Amazon Prime Germany
Another option for Ireland residents is to sign up for Amazon Prime video via the German version.
One advantage is that prices are a little lower than for Amazon Prime UK.
You’ll pay EUR 89.90 per year upfront for Amazon Prime Germany, or EUR 8,99 per month.
The yearly rate, in particular, is a little cheaper than the UK rate.
There is a downside, though. You don’t get Amazon Prime delivery to Ireland included. Instead, you’ll pay a fee for each shipment.
This costs €5.00 per delivery plus an additional €1.30 per kilogram. Items other than music, DVDs, games and software cost more.
Two-day delivery also attracts an extra charge, which is free with the UK version.

Amazon Prime Ireland – Summary
As Amazon UK is available in Ireland, you can benefit from many of the same advantages as those living in the UK including Prime photos, gaming, Kindle books and Amazon Music Prime.
(The latter is not the same as Amazon Music Unlimited, as you have access to fewer songs.)
Prime members living in Ireland also get free delivery, like UK customers.
The difference is that this is two-day delivery, rather than next-day delivery, due to the location.
One of the key differences between Amazon Prime Ireland and that offered to UK-based members is Prime video.
Those resident in Ireland can only access this via primevideo.com. UK residents can access the complete catalogue at amazon.co.uk.
Wherever you live, whether or not it’s worth being an Amazon Prime member depends on how much value you’ll get out of it.
If you regularly order from Amazon and want fast delivery, this feature could be worth it alone.
There is no way of knowing, at any given time, if popular shows such as Clarkson’s Farm, sports events and The Grand Tour will be available in Ireland at the same time as they are in the UK, as they’re available via different websites.
So it’s probably not worth basing your membership on one or two specific programmes alone.
If you like the sound of two million tracks, two-day delivery, a thousand books, photo storage and gaming benefits, though, then Amazon Prime is one of the most affordable streaming service options for Ireland residents.
When what you’ll get from it is worth £7.92 or £8.99 per month to you, then it’s worth it. Don’t forget that prices are in GBP, though, rather than EUR.
What’s also worth remembering is that you can sign up for a free trial of Amazon Prime. This generally lasts for 30 days.
As long as you set yourself a reminder to cancel – should you want to – before the free trial ends, that’s a great way to find out whether Amazon Prime is worth it!
